Saturday was absolutely beautiful! I started my morning off with a 15km run! Wasn't planning on such a long run but I got out there and didn't want to stop. Later that afternoon I met Connie and Rise at a cafe to enjoy the sun. Who knows how many days like this are left, so we thought we had to take advantage of it.
Saturday night I was able to go out with this guy for dinner! Of course, we started the night off with a beer at a bar near my place. Farfar probably could have spent all night there but, I wanted to get some food. The restaurant we wanted to go to didn't have an open table until the next day! They did however, recommend another restaurant for us to go to. We headed to this other restaurant, a 10min walk away. The restaurant was a little trendy, with an industrial feel. We had a lovely 3 course meal and some excellent wine.
After dinner we headed back to the bar for one more beer! We had a wonderful evening, it was nice to spend some time alone with Farfar in Copenhagen :) Sunday Garrett and Crystal arrived so it's about to get a whole lot busier! I am working but, will be meeting up with them (most likely) every day after work. Let's see what they think of Copenhagen!
My Farfar has arrived! Friday night I had him over for cake and coffee but, it was a little too warm, so we had cake and beer - he din't complain ;) It's great to see him, especially to have him here in Copenhagen.
Sunday we went to Berit and Mads' place for lunch. We had wonderful venison meet! Mads' coworker goes hunting and brought him back some fresh deer. I think this was my first time trying deer and it was delicious (sorry Leah)! We then headed over to the neighbour's to his smoke house and try some of his homemade beer. While there, we also got to try his homemade snaps... which was 48% alcohol content! Both the beer and snaps were great, I don't think Farfar wanted to leave. We went back to Berit and Mads' for dessert and to enjoy the rest of the evening. It was a lovely day, I always have a nice time going to visit Berit and Mads :)
Now Farfar and Jørgen have gone to Jutland (the mainland) to visit some of my grandma's family. I will have a few days to relax, then he comes back this weekend and my brother, Garrett, and his girlfriend, Crystal, arrive on Sunday...
Bring on the crazy!!!
Wednesday after work, Connie and I checked out this Beer Bar down the street from my place. It was recommended to me by a coworker, and I often pass by wanting to try it out. Well... we loved it! We're used to getting to usual beers on tap; Carlsberg, Tubrog, always good but we were in the mood for something different. This place had 20 different beers on tap, most from local micro breweries, and the variety changes each week. They didn't serve food but allowed us to go grab a pizza and come back to enjoy it with a beer. I think I found my new favourite spot!
After beer and pizza, Connie and I decided to bake! Our friend Max had his birthday on Thursday, which we wanted to make a cake for and tonight (Friday) I have visitors, which I wanted to make a cake for. So we made Apple Cake!
Thursday we had a little BBQ with Max for his birthday. We sat outside in Connie's courtyard. Luckily, it wasn't too cold, and with some candles, it quickly became very cozy!
It was a lovely evening :) Everyone enjoyed the night, including Max!
Today my Farfar (Father's father) has arrived from Canada! He is coming over to my place this evening with Annie and Jørgen for cake and coffee. Hopefully the cake will still be as delicious as it was yesterday. I am very excited to see him and experience Copenhagen with him, as this is where he grew up :) Have a wonderful weekend!
The other day I got the feeling I wanted to bake, at the same time I got the feeling I wanted apple pie... I called up Connie and we decided to get baking! We got the recipe from my dad but didn;t get all the ingredients so we made a lot up as we went along. We figured it was mainly apples, sugar and cinnamon, how it could be bad!
We didn't have cream so we improvised and mix together milk, sugar and cream cheese.... to our surprise, it came out delicious! There was no recipe for dough, so we threw together some butter, flour and sugar, until it was a consistency we thought was adequate. We made 6 mini pies and decorated the tops in various 'styles'.
They came out golden (sort of), and were topped off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a peppermint tea on the side! Everyone who tried it really liked it, I'd say we did a great job :)
After a trip to Ikea, my room is much more homie now! I bought and put together a simple shelving unit. I also got a bunch of pillows and new duvet, I never want to leave my bed!! See mom, there's some colour... sort of... Still a few little things to get, but I am very close to being done. My room is so cozy and the apartment feels like home :)
One of my favourite items in my room is this picture. Caroline drew it for me and sent to me for my birthday. I put it in a white frame, so it feels like the arctic ;) I love it and am amazed at how awesome Caroline's drawings are!
I was able to take a few pictures from my new place! I have yet to completely unpack and I need to make a trip to Ikea for a few things but, for the most part I am settled. Here goes my virtual tour:
The kitchen may not be big but, it is bright and everything in it is nice and clean. All the appliances are good quality and, possibly my favourite part, our cutlery is gold and our dishes are all Royal Copenhagen!
This is my friend Peter's summerhouse where we stayed for the weekend! On the north east side of Bornholm, it was right by the water and absolutely beautiful. The house itself was very cozy and the weekend was wonderful. Below you can see the view from the balcony, the beautiful Baltic Sea!
We had rented a car and Saturday went out to do some sight seeing. We went to Hammershus, according to Wikipedia it’s Northern Europe's largest medieval fortification. Walking through the ruins was lots of fun, I wanted to be 10 again and play games running and hiding in all the rooms!
Above, you can see Peter trying to feed the sheep and the cows… sadly no bites.
For lunch we went for smoked herring! I was a little nervous, I enjoy pickled herring but it is very strong and I had no idea what to expect from the smoked herring... but it was delicious! On a piece of rye bread with butter, lots of salt, onions, radishes and egg. And, of course, on the side a local beer and some snaps :)
We quickly realized each town was the same... a harbour, a nice little 'downtown' area, then the houses. It was very sweet but all very similar. Apparently it is all similar on the east, as this side is the rocky coast, whereas the west is sandy. With all the harbours it was easy to find fresh fish! We picked up some fresh salmon to throw on the grill for dinner.
Sunday it rained, and rained, and rained… we had a big breakfast and decided to take a walk. We went through some paths, and found ourselves down along the water. It was really neat to see the waves crashing along the rocky coastline! The rain and wind did not stop and by the time we got back to the house we were absolutely drenched. We cleaned up, and it was time to head back to Copenhagen. With our bags filled with soaking wet clothing we arrived at the ferry station with plenty of time to spare. Just our luck, the ferry was delayed an hour and when we finally got on the ferry it was not pleasant. The waves were rocking the boat; thank goodness it was only an hour and twenty minutes… We got back to Copenhagen later than expected but we made it safely.
After a great weekend, came the start to a great week - Monday I moved into my new room! I am living with a Danish girl in an excellent part of town. I am still getting settled and unpacking but so far, so good!
